Explore the largest collection of Azerbaijani carpets and rugs in the world at the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, displaying traditional and modern patterns of the nation's UNESCO-protected applied art. Opened in 1967 as the first specialized museum for carpets in the world, the museum has amassed an impressive collection over the decades. And in 2015 it relocated from a mosque to a modern building shaped like a rolled-up carpet by the Caspian Sea. Watch women weaving their patterns in one of the workshops, and learn about the different techniques and meanings of various patterns. Over 10,000 accompanying artifacts such as ceramics, jewelry, and metalwork enrich your understanding of this cultural heritage. One of many must visit places in Baku. It will give you a better understanding of the carpet weaving traditions here and which motives are used in which region. This will help you make an informed decision when buying carpets later on. There are at least 3 stations where they have weaving demonstration. Be sure to check out the top floor where carpet weaving is used as another way of painting.
