A striking structure of white marble, the Huseyn Javid Mausoleum in Nakhchivan city was built over the grave of the brilliant early 20th-century Azerbaijani writer and playwright, Huseyn Javid. Huseyn Javid worked as a teacher before authoring a number of poems, plays and historical epics in the 1920s and 1930s, contributing greatly to the development of Azerbaijani literature. However, he was arrested in 1937 during Stalin’s purges and died in 1941 in Siberia. It was until 1982 that his remains were transported back to his native Nakhchivan. The monument was sculpted by Omar Eldarov, a People’s Artist of Azerbaijan.
