The beautiful Chotari Church was built in 1723 in the very unique village of Nij, home to an ancient Christian people called the Udis who have their own language and culture. The church functioned until the Soviet period, when it was used to store hazelnuts and fell into disrepair. It was eventually restored in 2006 with the help of a Norwegian NGO and since then has been operating again with services held every Sunday. If you're passing through the Gabala region, call in here for an insight into Azerbaijan’s Christian heritage. Plan my Nij trip by asking Inspirock to come up with tips and suggestions.
