Sheki Karvansaray, Sheki

#6 of 8 in Historic Sites in Shaki-Zagatala Region
Architectural Building · Hidden Gem · Historic Site
In the past Sheki hosted a bustling silk industry and caravanserais were built to accommodate traders and travellers, their goods and animals. Two remain in the city today, however at the moment only one of them can be visited. This caravanserai, the so-called Upper Caravanserai, has functioned as a hotel since the late 1980s and offers one of the most unique stays in the Caucasus which is also very affordable. The rooms have been fashioned from the old stoned-walled cells with arched wooden doors used by old travellers. Even if you're not staying it's worth having a look around and visiting the onsite teahouse for a Silk Road tea experience. • A character filled hotel in a beautiful setting. Rooms are basic but clean and very good value for money. We stayed for 2 nights and would go back with friends again.  more »
  • One walk-through in the Carvanserai brings to life immediately the vastness and vitality of the Silk Road.  more »
