Architectural Building · Historic Site
Zagatala is a picturesque region scattered with historical monuments. One of the best is the Zagatala Fortress, built by the Russians in 1830, shortly after they annexed north-western Azerbaijan. It was used to defend the area from mountain tribes eager to maintain their independence and became the site of fierce battles. Later, the mutineers of the battleship Potemkin were imprisoned here in 1907. Today, you can walk around the old fortress walls, see the ruins of various buildings and imagine the place populated with thousands of tsarist soldiers.
