Gobustan

Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape (UNESCO Heritage) covers three areas of a plateau of rocky boulders rising out of the semi-desert of central Azerbaijan, with an outstanding collection of more than 6,000 rock engravings bearing testimony to 40,000 years of rock art.
Start off your visit on the 6th (Sun): make a trip to Mud Volcanoes and then get a new perspective on nature at Gobustan State Reserve.

Getting from Baku to Gobustan by car takes about 1.5 hours. Other options: take a train. Expect a daytime high around 10°C in December, and nighttime lows around 3°C. On the 6th (Sun), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can take a train to Ganja.

A Young Spirit Located in an Ancient Land

Famous as the birthplace of legendary poet Nizami, Ganja is a truly ancient city still bearing traces of the myriad kingdoms and empires that ruled over it in the past.
Get out of town with these interesting Ganja side-trips: Sheki (Sheki Fortress, Sheki Khans' Palace, &more). Spend the 7th (Mon) exploring at Lake Goygol. There's still lots to do: contemplate the waterfront views at Maralgol lake, take in the architecture and atmosphere at The Alexander Nevsky Church, take in the spiritual surroundings of Imamzadeh Mausoleum, and stroll around Khan's Garden.

Traveling by train from Gobustan to Ganja takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive. Expect a bit cooler evenings in Ganja when traveling from Gobustan in December, with lows around 0°C. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 10th (Thu) to allow time for travel back home.
