A truly contemporary city criss-crossed by history, Baku offers everything from the modern elegance of the Flame Towers to the medieval UNESCO-listed Old City at its core.
Kids will enjoy Baku Old City and Baku Boulevard. Change things up with a short trip to Gobustan State Reserve in Gobustan (about 1h 5 min away). There's lots more to do: see the interesting displays at Heydar Aliyev Center, take an in-depth tour of National Museum of History of Azerbaijan, stroll the grounds of Alley of Martyrs, and take in panoramic vistas at Flame Towers.

Johannesburg, South Africa to Baku is an approximately 16-hour flight. You'll lose 2 hours traveling from Johannesburg to Baku due to the time zone difference. Traveling from Johannesburg in May, Baku is somewhat warmer at night with lows of 17°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 16th (Mon) so you can go by car to Shamakhi.

Shamakhi — 2 nights

Azerbaijan's former capital surrounded by fine countryside and packed with cultural heritage, Shamakhi is one of Azerbaijan’s most historic cities and the birthplace of legendary Azerbaijani poets Sabir and Nesimi.
Kick off your visit on the 17th (Tue): take in the spiritual surroundings of Juma Mosque. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: contemplate the long history of Diri Baba Mausoleum and then see the interesting displays at Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory.
