A truly contemporary city criss-crossed by history, Baku offers everything from the modern elegance of the Flame Towers to the medieval UNESCO-listed Old City at its core.
Museum-lovers will get to explore Heydar Aliyev Center and Ali Shamsi Studio. Visit Baku Old City and Ateshgah Fire Temple for their historical value. There's still lots to do: go for a walk through Baku Boulevard, don't miss a visit to Flame Towers, examine the collection at Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, and get a taste of the local shopping with Nizami Street/Torgovaya.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates to Baku is an approximately 6-hour flight. You can also drive. Expect cooler weather when traveling from Dubai in July: highs in Baku hover around 36°C, while lows dip to 26°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 5th (Tue) early enough to go by car to Shamakhi.

Shamakhi — 2 nights

Azerbaijan's former capital surrounded by fine countryside and packed with cultural heritage, Shamakhi is one of Azerbaijan’s most historic cities and the birthplace of legendary Azerbaijani poets Sabir and Nesimi.
Start off your visit on the 6th (Wed): stroll the grounds of Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum and then see the interesting displays at Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory. Here are some ideas for day two: experience rural life at Alpaca Azerbaijan and then do a tasting at Meyseri Wines.

You can drive from Baku to Shamakhi in 2 hours. Other options are to take a train; or do a combination of bus and taxi. Traveling from Baku in July, plan for a bit cooler nights in Shamakhi, with lows around 21°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 7th (Thu) so you can go by car to Gabala.

Famous as the birthplace of legendary poet Nizami, Ganja is a truly ancient city still bearing traces of the myriad kingdoms and empires that ruled over it in the past.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Imamzadeh Mausoleum and Shah Abbas Mosque. Shop till you drop at Ganja Mall and Javad Khan Street. Spend the 8th (Fri) exploring at Lake Goygol.

Traveling by car from Gabala to Ganja takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of taxi and train. Traveling from Gabala in July, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be a bit warmer in Ganja, with lows of 25°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Sun) so you can take a train to Gobustan.

Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape (UNESCO Heritage) covers three areas of a plateau of rocky boulders rising out of the semi-desert of central Azerbaijan, with an outstanding collection of more than 6,000 rock engravings bearing testimony to 40,000 years of rock art.
Start off your visit on the 11th (Mon): steep yourself in history at Diri Baba Mausoleum. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 12th (Tue): get a new perspective on nature at Gobustan State Reserve and then don't miss a visit to Mud Volcanoes.
