Baku — 6 nights

A truly contemporary city criss-crossed by history, Baku offers everything from the modern elegance of the Flame Towers to the medieval UNESCO-listed Old City at its core.
Change things up with a short trip to Gobustan State Reserve in Gobustan (about 1h 5 min away). Dedicate the 4th (Tue) to wine at some of the top wineries in the area. The adventure continues: steep yourself in history at Baku Old City, examine the collection at Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, walk around Highland Park, and make a trip to Fountains Square.

Budapest, Hungary to Baku is an approximately 7-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 3 hours traveling from Budapest to Baku. Plan for a bit warmer temperatures traveling from Budapest in January, with highs in Baku at 8°C and lows at 2°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 10th (Mon) so you can go by car to Goygol.

Ganja — 5 nights

Famous as the birthplace of legendary poet Nizami, Ganja is a truly ancient city still bearing traces of the myriad kingdoms and empires that ruled over it in the past.
Ganja is known for sightseeing, historic sites, and parks. Your trip includes some of its best attractions: contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Goygol, take in the architecture and atmosphere at The Alexander Nevsky Church, take in the spiritual surroundings of Shah Abbas Mosque, and identify plant and animal life at Maralgol lake.

Ganja is just a short distance from Goygol. Expect a daytime high around 9°C in January, and nighttime lows around 0°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 16th (Sun) early enough to go by car to Shamkir.

Fresh vegetables may be what most visitors associate with Samkir, but this small city also throws up several historical surprises as well as one of the country’s most original parks into the holiday mix.
