Gobustan — 1 night

Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape (UNESCO Heritage) covers three areas of a plateau of rocky boulders rising out of the semi-desert of central Azerbaijan, with an outstanding collection of more than 6,000 rock engravings bearing testimony to 40,000 years of rock art.
Start off your visit on the 19th (Thu): learn more about the world around you at Gobustan State Reserve. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: don't miss a visit to Mud Volcanoes.

Sheki is Azerbaijan’s true travel gem, a small city off the forested slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountains rich in Silk Road history and renowned for its fascinating architecture, food, and friendly residents.
On the 25th (Wed), take in the architecture and atmosphere at Church of Kish and then admire the landmark architecture of Sheki Karvansaray. Keep things going the next day: explore the world behind art at Museum of Folk and Applied Arts, then browse the exhibits of Sheki Khans' Palace, and then make a trip to Sheki Fortress.

You can drive from Gabala to Sheki in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 28°C in May, and nighttime lows around 16°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 26th (Thu) early enough to go by car to Ganja.
